The Missing Links

In the second half of 2025, Western Sydney Airport (WSI) is expected to open its doors to cargo flights and within twelve months of that milestone, for the first time in our history, commercial passengers will be able to journey in and out of Sydney without having to travel to Mascot. It's been a long-awaited event and more than three million Sydney-siders will be able to choose WSI over SYD.

So, how will people be able to access WSI?

Self-Drive. Many will choose to take command of their own access and use newly-minted infrastructure such as the M12 Motorway. This motorway has so far been deemed by the NSW government to be toll-free, a rarity in our large bustling city. The M12 will span between the M7 Motorway (tolled) near Elizabeth Drive and The Northern Road at Luddenham. A spur will allow direct access to WSI at its northern end.

Rail. Sydney's newest Metro Train will extend southward from the heavy rail station at St Marys to WSI with two stations in the airport precinct, one at the Business Centre, the other adjacent to the terminal.

Bus. All I can say based on what I've heard to date is "possibly". Should that eventuate, I'm not sure too many people will want to be lugging their bags on and off a bus.

Well folks. That's it! If you live in South West Sydney or beyond, there's nothing for you in the way of fixed infrastructure to get you to and from WSI. The business cases for rail from the region are only being considered by the NSW government now, so it will be decades before anything practical will eventuate. And yet South West Sydney is the fastest growing region in Australia!
